Staying motivated with your walking program can be easier said than done. Motivation is fluid and can change from day to day—or hour to hour. Here are a few tips to help keep your motivation high. Revisit your goals. Occasionally, motivation flags because the goals we set are too easy or are no longer meaningful. When you feel unmotivated, take out your goal sheet (you did write them down, correct?), and take a few minutes to decide if these goals are still what you want to strive for and get you excited. Keep the end in mind. Know what you want to accomplish and remind yourself of it whenever possible. Put pictures on your refrigerator, on your desk at work, and in your wallet. Imagine the feelings you’ll have when you reach your goals, and visualize yourself meeting them. Find support. Sometimes all it takes to revive sagging motivation is a few encouraging words from someone else. Ask your spouse, kids, family, and friends to help you stay positive and upbeat. Hearing their opinions and thoughts will help you move forward when you feel stalled, and you’ll remember their words while you’re walking. Ask someone to walk with you. It gets old exercising alone. Find a walking buddy, or join a walking club, and enjoy yourself. You’ll also feel safer and walk longer or farther. Talking and walking is a good gauge of the intensity you’re exercising. If you can’t carry on a conversation, slow down a little bit. Take your dog (or someone else’s). You can’t help but have fun when you have a dog walking with you. Their happy zest for life is infectious, and they’re always ready to go. Walking is just as good for them as it is for you, and it helps your motivation because you don’t want to let the dog down! Add a beat. If you’re used to walking in silence, try adding some music to your routine. Walk to the music you like best, and even if your motivation is so-so, you’ll grab the chance to walk and hear your favorite songs. Switch it up. Walk someplace new, or go at a different time of day. Any change you make will refresh your walking routine and make it fun again. The more you vary your walking program, the better results you will have, and the more likely you will be to continue it. The more fun you can have with your walking program, the more excited you’ll be to keep doing it, and the happier you’ll be with yourself for accomplishing your goals.
